Home & Garden

Time to pull the boxes out of the attic, hang up the wreath and wrap your house in lights and garland. Holiday decorations are making their annual debut, to the misery of some who suffer from asthma and allergies.

“You disturb dust and other debris that hasn’t been touched for a year and it can certainly cause problems,” says Dr. Richard Lockey, director of the allergy and immunology division at USF Health in Tampa.

If your symptoms have been under good control but lately you are short of breath, sneezing, wheezing or coughing, or have itchy, watery eyes or a runny or stuffy nose, the problem may be seasonal.

Teak Finishing-Teak oil-Teak furniture care

To restore your teak furniture to its original color, you can simply sand it lightly with a fine grain sandpaper and then reapply teak oil or just leave it as it is. In time, it will of course turn gray again. The photos above show before and after wood conditions of weathered teak furniture. Because this is a quality piece of teak outdoor furniture, weather and harsh conditions have had little effect on the structural integrity of the piece. Underneath the oxidation is a beautiful piece of furniture. Restoration can be done as follows.

1. Wash the wood with a mild soap and warm water. This will remove surface dirt and some of the oxidation on the surface of the wood. There are many different products available on the market for cleaning teak wood furniture and teak wood, however we do not make any specific recommendations for any one product.

Cold zone gardening — Bend Oregon Luxury Homes

Cold Zone Gardening, Redmond Greenhouse Most of us who live here in the Central Oregon High Desert are transplants from other climates. Gardening in Central Oregon is both challenging and rewarding. Some new residents valiantly plant their beloved Rhododendrons only to watch them struggle against the cold, dry climate. Others hang pots of stunning flowering fuchsias in May only to see them mercilessly taken by early morning frost.

Central Oregon is blessed to have Doug Stott, master gardener extraordinaire and owner of Redmond Greenhouse. In addition to being the resident expert in “Cold Zone Gardening,” Doug is a bit of a philosopher.

Doug Stott, Redmond Greenhouse and Master GardenerGardening for Life” is a strong statement that many have chosen to embrace. Stimulating words, thoughts, and actions that help germinate new directions, goals, and dreams. As with the typical garden path, some are worn and rutted, while others are obscured due to the pace of life we live. These special paths are always there and for the lucky ones who chance upon them, I can only say, Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening.”

What is Raised Bed Gardening

Many people ask, what is raised bed gardening? In simplest terms it is when you build a garden that has a frame, and fill the frame with soil so it is above the surrounding territory. Raised bed gardening can be a great assistance to those gardeners who are plagued with poor drainage of their yard. By creating a raised bed, the garden will no longer be overly wet, and thus less susceptible to disease and decay. Additionally a raised bed garden will allow easier access to the plants and vegetables, as you won’t have to bend over, and down as far, as a traditional garden. The soil in a raised bed garden will warm up quicker, than a normal garden, thus allowing you plant certain vegetables in your garden slightly earlier than normal.

When choosing a location for your raised bed vegetable garden make sure you choose the sunniest place in your yard. Once you have gone through all the work of setting up your garden, you don’t want to have to move it to a new location later. Generally you should try to have the rows of your vegetable garden run from north to south. The tallest crops should be planted on the north side of the garden, so they don’t cast a shadow over the rest of your garden. The smaller crops such as lettuce and carrots can be planted on the southern side, as they won’t cast much of a shadow over the rest of the garden.

As a measure of the mood at the 2011 Seattle Home Show, consider that one of the hottest displays features cabins a scant 200 square feet in size.

Not many folks are making the tiny wood structures their primary residences — yet — but sales last year grew more than 50 percent, said Chad Taylor, president of Marysville-based Coast Cabins & Sheds.

The economic downturn has made it tougher to upgrade to a bigger house, so many people are eager for an affordable way to add an office, storage space or mother-in-law unit, he said.
